Fiberglass molding is the same as wood molding except for the fact that it is manufactured using a mold, instead of cut and shaped like regular wood. This molding has similar properties to wood but it is lighter, durable and moisture resistant. The molding installs with adhesive or finishing nails just like wooden molding. The results are also similar. The molding trims floors and doors with expert results.
Step 1
Lay the fiberglass molding board along the wall at the intersection of the floor where you want to install the molding. Press the board firmly up against the corner of the first adjoining wall.
Step 2
Hold the fiberglass molding tightly to the wall and then make a pencil mark on the back of the baseboard where the board extends beyond the end of the wall. This marks where the molding piece will be cut.
Step 3
Set the fiberglass molding into a miter saw and line up the mark you made in pencil with the cutting mark on the saw. Gently bring the blade down onto the molding and make sure the blade contacts the mark, to ensure the board is lined up properly. Turn on the saw and cut the board. If you are mitering the corners, set the saw blade to a 45 degree angle and then cut the board.
Step 4
Place the molding board back into place on the wall. Hammer in one finishing nail along the top and bottom of the molding, or wherever the nails will be less noticeable. Hold the molding firm as you hammer to ensure it does not slip. Use a finish nail punch to recess the nails by one eighth of an inch.
If you choose to use adhesive, instead of nailing the fiberglass boards to the wall, apply a bead of adhesive to the back of the board and then set it into place, firmly press and hold the board until it adheres. Hammer in one of two finishing nails to secure the board in place.
Step 5
Place the next fiberglass molding board against the wall at the floor. Cut to length on the miter saw and then install with a hammer and finish nails. Repeat until the room is finished.
