A Kohler shower valve helps regulate and alter the temperature of your water, by mixing hot and cold water together, as the handle turns one way or the other. Kohler shower valves are not the same as other major faucet brands, they include a few different parts and a different process for removal. But if you want to fix your kohler shower valve and correct a leak or hot water problem, you’ll need to learn how to take the valve apart.
Remove the Kohler faucet handle to access the shower valve, since it is located beneath the handle on Kohler faucets. Take out the Allen screw on the handle’s base and pull the handle backwards and off of the shower faucet.
Next, remove that round metal trim plate behind the faucet. There are two screws to remove here, just unscrew them and pull the plate off the wall.
Remove the dial on the end of the faucet and then unscrew the Kohler shower valve collar. Once the valve collar screws are out of the faucet, you can slide the entire shower valve out by simply pulling it back with your hands.
A few of the parts and components might be left inside the Kohler faucet body, so take these out as well.
Find a replacement Kohler shower valve at a hardware or plumbing store, make sure it is specific to your model, not just any Kohler shower faucet. You won’t be able to fix the faucet with another brand’s replacement shower valve.
Insert the new Kohler shower valve and tighten the screws. Then install the trim and replace the handle.
That’s all you need to do to fix your leaking Kohler shower valve, or upgrade a malfunctioning shower that does not deliver enough hot water.
